ABOUT THE TRAINING:
This course is intended for therapists, well-being professionals and coaches who work with clients to help them to change their lives for the better. Since the very early days of psychology and psychotherapy, it has been recognized that the natural reproductive drive can be a cause of emotional and psychological distress. For human beings, intimacy is much more than its basic biological function of reproduction in order to propagate the species and is not restricted biologically to any great extent so we have developed recreational, rather than reproductive, intimacy to a greater degree than just about any other primate. This powerful force of raw life energy is subject to many taboos, along with birth and death. People are often embarrassed, afraid, suspicious, self-conscious, and anxious when it comes to this topic, and that often extends to therapists and coaches!
The expression of these feelings and drives are subject to many different cultural and religious beliefs and prohibitions. Humans do not simply follow their impulses as other mammals do. We are expected to think, feel and act in certain prescribed ways in relation to intimacy, but often without any explicit information or teachings about what we should do, mostly the focus is on what we should not do. Most people are very ill-informed and uneducated about this topic and our early beliefs and thoughts about it are a confusing mixture of things that we have heard from our peers and from media representations, many of which are very artificial and unrealistic.
In this course we’ll discuss how therapists, well-being professionals and coaches can provide effective support to their clients and give an overview of the upcoming online professional development intensive course on this topic which will provide extensive information about the most common presenting problems and the sorts of therapeutic interventions that can be provided. In addition to the mainstream Western models of therapy, we will consider the Eastern model in which this is regarded as a form of energy, and potentially a part of spiritual practice, not only a form of pleasure and biological reproduction.
